Guinea pigs

Guinea pigs in the grass

Owing to their very gentle and cheerful character, guinea pigs (also known as cavies) are very suitable as a pet for children. Of course adults can also have a lot of fun with these animals. Most important is that you know which care they need.

Guinea pigs are very social animals that are used to live in large groups in nature. As a result, a guinea pig that is kept alone will feel very lonely. Therefore, it is always preferable to keep two or more guinea pigs together. However, it is very important to think about which animals you are going to keep together and to inform yourself first in order to prevent undesired babies and serious fights.

Guinea pigs do not demand a lot. If they have a large clean cage, a daily portion of hay, some vegetables, water and a dry food mix from the pet store, they are almost satisfied. The final thing they want is some attention from their boss. They like to cuddle, to be combed and to be played with as much as possible. Every guinea pig will be a bit shy in the beginning, but if you give him what he wants, he will start to like you, recognize you and greet you with a loud whistle sound.

Contrary to what is often thought, two male guinea pigs can in many cases be kept as a pair. If you need more information on this topic, you can read this webpage (in Dutch) or send us anemail .
